Butler County Nutrition Education Helping Address Food Insecurity

Planning Unit: Butler County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

According to countyhealthrankings.org, 16 percent of Butler County residents are food insecure. It is the goal of the Butler County Nutrition Education Program to help lower this statistic through education. The NEP assistant collaborated with Community Action of Southern Kentucky to reach this audience monthly.

Each month the Butler County Community Service Coordinator sent the Butler County Nutrition Education Program Assistant a list of what food would be distributed to the residents of Butler County at commodity distribution.  The NEP assistant would then compile booklets with NEP recipes that the participants could make using the commodities they received. Other relevant resources would also be included such as information on PlanEatMove.com, food safety, Fresh EBT, USDA food facts and NEP class information. Throughout 2021 over 1800 booklets, pamphlets and other resources have been distributed.

The Butler County Nutrition Program Assistant, and Community Action of Southern Kentucky combined efforts to reach the food insecure population of Butler County.  Education through this ongoing partnership will help them become less reliant on commodities and be able to use them efficiently as an additional tool to help meet their health needs.
