Author: Michele Moore

Planning Unit: Butler County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The 2017 articleThe importance of nutrition in aiding recovery from substance use disorders: A reviewin the Drug and Alcohol Dependence concluded, “…. nutrition should be an important part of the treatment of substance use disorders; however, it is not given much consideration in treatment guidelines, despite evidence that recovery outcomes can be improved by nutrition therapy and well-balanced nutrient intake.” The Butler County Nutrition Education Program Assistant in partnership with Kentucky Christian Recovery, successfully addressed this with 88 individuals in substance abuse recovery.”

The NEP assistant taught Healthy Choices for Every Body curriculum to male clientele at Kentucky Christian Recovery. Upon completion of the program 98% of the participants showed improvement in one or more diet quality indicators. Two of those indicators are represented in 54% eat red and orange vegetables more each week and 50% reported eating more dark green vegetables. This outcome alone is aiding in the overall recovery of those in substance abuse recovery by making healthy dietary choices.
