The Need is Real

Author: Teresa King

Planning Unit: Meade County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The need for food assistance in Meade County significantly increased with the onset of Covid-19. Several of the food pantries were overwhelmed with people from the community that faced layoffs and the need to stay home with their children. The Meade County Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program Assistant partnered with Journey Church and Feeding America to assist with the start of a mass monthly food distribution. Each month the assistant provides recipes and United States Department of Agriculture Food Fact Sheets that could be used with the commodities that are given out that month. One of the participants commented, “Thank you for the recipes, I have never used dried beans before and have no idea what to do with them!” By providing resources each month for the families the amount of waste due to the lack of knowledge of some commodity foods has decreased. The partnership with Journey Church and Feeding America has allowed the assistant to reach over 850 families each month.
