Planning Unit: Wayne County CES

Major Program: Small Farm Management

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Wayne County Soil Conservation District provides farmers with no-till planters to plant grass, post driver to fence with, spreaders to spread manure and lime in Wayne County. The KSU Small Farm Assistant provides farmers with pasture sprayers, plastic mulch layers, water wheel setter, plastic mulch lifter, pumpkin and sweet corn planter, and cattle handling equipment through the Wayne County Extension Office.

Several farmers approached the Soil Conservation Office to help with demonstration equipment for goats and sheep. They tried several ways to get funded to help this group of farmers to meet their needs with their animals. They approached me to help with funds to help small animal producers meet their needs.

KSU and USDA have always been helpful in meeting the needs of small farmers. BY asking KSU's Joni Nelson, she help find funds to purchase the Small Animal Demonstration Equipment for Wayne County's goat and sheep producers to use.

The equipment was purchased on 6-30-2021 and has been used at the Wayne County Fair for the goat and sheep show, an AI School for sheep to transfer embryos and AI breeding at one farmers location, so that several farmers could come together with their animals. That made it possible for a veterinarian to have enough sheep to work with at that location. The equipment was used at a Soil Conservation field day as demonstration equipment. Also several farmers have used the equipment for hoof trimming and de-worming. A local school demonstration was planned but was cancelled because of covid 19.

With the help of the Wayne County Soil Conservation Office, KSU and USDA, the Small Animal Demonstration Equipment has been used by several programs and farmers to meet the needs of the goat and sheep producers of Wayne County.
