Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General
Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
Lewis County seniors always enjoy monthly nutrition lessons presented by the Lewis County Snap-Ed Program Assistant in partnership with the Gateway Community Action Center. As a result of the pandemic however; in person meetings were halted. While this posed an obstacle, it was one that the Lewis County Snap-Ed assistant and the director of the Gateway Community Action (GCA) Center where willing to work to find a solution in an effort to still place vital nutrition & physical activity information into the hands of Lewis County seniors.
Working in conjunction with the meal delivery van drivers, the GCA director & Snap-Ed assistant nutrition packets were compiled and delivered with meals. Information included food safety during power outages, physical activity tips for seniors, safe storage of foods, home preservation tips, Seasoned Magazines & Healthy Choices newsletters were distributed throughout the county. Once per month, 75 meals were picked up with approximately 200 meals delivered throughout the county totaling 275 homes receiving the nutrition program message.
The work took the partnership of several individuals making it a team effort but the fruits of the labor were very much worth the effort. In a time when delivery methods varied and in person visits were not possible, the vitally important message from the Nutrition Education Program was brought straight into to the hands of seniors in Lewis County, all through a little hard work and some team efforts.
