A Happy Surprise

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Wolfe County SNAP assistant was granted funds for a cooking program from the local Alcohol Substance Abuse Policy council. The SNAP Ed Assistant partnered with local substance abuse clinics and the local high school .

Weekly recipes from the Healthy Choices for Everybody  curriculum were selected.  The ingredients were shopped for and included in grocery kits; along with an incentive related to the lesson.  Additionally, our Family and Consumer Science agent provided materials concerning the benefits of eating healthy, eating together and other beneficial family practices in the kits.  A Healthy Choices lesson along with a recipe demonstration was presented on Face Book Live.

The first week of the grocery kit pick up, it seemed the families were hesitant to post a photo to our Face Book group of their prepared recipe for the week.  When I next contacted to our Family Resource and Youth Services Coordinator, much to my surprise, she was very happy.  Our coordinator joined the Face Book group and she saw that one of her referrals had prepared the recipe, posted a photo, stated she liked the recipe, and additionally remarked " I am very proud of myself, this is my first recipe."  Our coordinator related that this was a break through,  There has been many unsuccessful attempts to persuade this participant to join group activities.

This participant has younger siblings in the home and is living with an elderly relative due to the parents' addictions.  By learning to cook and having nutrition knowledge this education is valuable to her family situation.  One hundred percent of the youth in this group showed an improvement  in their food selection behavior.  Eighty-nine percent of the group improved their physical activity.
