Major Program: Backyard Streams
Every Year the Corp of Engineer at Nolin State Park hold an ECO Meet at the tail water area below Nolin Lake Dam. Several Schools in the region send their 4th grade class to learn about the environment and how to help protect it. Stations are set up in ten different areas on a variety of environmental topics. Kentucky has over 90,000 miles of streams and rivers, with many of those stream miles passing through urban landscapes. To help address homeowner concerns related to backyard streams, University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service water specialists developed a Backyard Streams program. This program includes an online course with 12 learning modules, publications, workshops, videos, and a website housing these resources. The Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences Academy is a state sponsored 4-H program that is a 3 year commitment for participants. The program focuses on water, forestry and wildlife. Individual participants are required to plan an educational program on what they have learned and share it with others or develop a community service project.
