Alpha-gal syndrome is an allergic condition caused by the bite of certain ticks, most notably the lone star tick, which introduces a sugar molecule called alpha-gal into the human body. This triggers a delayed allergic reaction to red meat and other mammal products, causing symptoms ranging from hives and stomach pain to life-threatening anaphylaxis.
