Success at the Kentucky State Fair

The Kentucky State Fair is a culminating event of yearly 4-H project work. Project work is defined by including the following: “(a) Planned work in an area of interest to the 4-H member, (b) Guided by a 4-H adult volunteer who is the project leader, (c) Aimed at planned objectives that can be attained and measured, (d) Summarized by some form of record keeping, and (e) A minimum of six hours of project instruction” (National 4-H Council, 2013). Curing Country Hams

The 4-H Country Ham project has become a staple of the Henry County 4-H program. The project has been a multi-generational project for over 20 years. The project allows adults and families to purchase hams as well as 4-H aged youth. There are as many as three generations working alongside one another preparing the raw hams to be hung in the ham house. It always seems to be the coldest January day of the year when the hams are brought to the local extension office.
