Situation:
According to Kentucky's STEM ED Report Card, jobs in science, engineering and technology are essential for ensuring America's economic growth and national security. During the next decade the demand for scientists and engineers is expected to increase at four times the rate of all other occupations. However, today's high school students overall are not performing well in science and math and fewer and fewer of them are pursuing degrees in technical fields. A key to encouraging more youth to explore careers in science related fields is to expose them to science at an early age.

Kentucky 4-H SET offers youth the opportunity to learn scientific research techniques, responsible practices and innovative technologies that positively address science, engineering and technology issues. Through the Land Grant University and Extension system, 4-H can expand its impact and extend its reach in science, engineering and technology (4-H SET) by providing opportunities for hands-on scientific learning and discovery in 4-H Clubs.
Long-Term Outcomes:
*Youth will utilize the scientific method to solve problems in their daily life.
*Youth will choose a career path in science, engineering or technology subject matter.
*Youth will utilize the scientific method in decision making.
*Youth will be better prepared for college and have a greater chance to succeed.
Intermediate Outcomes:
*Youth will use and apply the skills gained from 4-H Science, engineering and technology.
*Youth will demonstrate and share new abilities in science , engineering and technology with others.
*Youth will practice scientific methods learned in 4-H SET clubs.
*Teens will mentor younger 4-H'ers in science, engineering and technology.
Initial Outcomes:
*Youth will increase interest and engagement in science, engineering and technology.
*Youth will learn new skills in science, engineering and technology.
*Youth will be introduced to careers in science, engineering and technology.
*Teens will participate in science, engineering and technology 4-H programs to acquire new skills.
Evaluation:
Initial Outcome: Youth will learn new skills in 4-H science, engineering and technology.
Indicator: Number of youth who use knowledge and skills from 4-H SET in daily life.

The KY 4-H Program offers many opportunities for youth ages 9-18 to learn new things, meet new people, and develop essential skills that they will continue to use throughout life.   Participation in 4-H programs can also open many doors for youth that they may not have had otherwise.
