Situation:

In 2019, Adair County Citizens identified health, wellness, and families among the top priority issues through the Extension Community needs assessment.  When compared to the state of Kentucky, Adair County falls below average for median household income and above average for unemployment, child poverty, and uninsured individuals. Combined, these issues put strains on families mental, physical, and financial health.  

Family and Consumer Science programs offered by the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service are equipped to address the issues to serve as a catalyst to to make Adair a more vibrant community.

Long-Term Outcomes:

Create safe homes within environments that promote and support the physical, financial and mental well-being of families throughout the life cycle.


Intermediate Outcomes:

Examine personal and financial stability on a regular basis (at least annually).

Change in behavior related to healthy aging, independent aging and quality aging.

Participate in an activity or event that improves the built or natural environment.

Initial Outcomes:

Participants will identify short, medium and long term personal goals and objectives related to maintaining and improving their financial stability.

Change in awareness, knowledge, and aspirations related to healthy aging, independent aging and quality aging.

Participants will identify one or more practices that will improve going green, disaster preparedness and a built environment.


Evaluation:

Initial Outcome: Participants will identify short, medium, and long term personal goals and objectives related to maintaining and improving their physical, mental or financial well-being.
Indicator: Participants will improve awareness of their physical, mental, or financial well-being.

    Adair County recently hired a new Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, Dylan Gentry. Adair County had been without a FCS Agent since before the pandemic, but despite this local homemaker membership numbers stayed consistent. Beef Jerky Workshop Offers New Way to Preserve Meat

    A popular and meaty snack is jerky, made of beef, venison, and other meats. However, a barrier to making homemade jerky is the lack of knowledge of how to safely dehydrate meat. Jerky in the store is often prohibitively expense, so the extension office around deer hunting and slaughter season often gets asked how to make jerky. Nutrition Education Programing Creates Community Partnership

    LEAP is nutrition education program targeted toward headstart aged youth. Lessons range from promoting exercise to eating more fruits and vegetables. In Adair County, In 2017, according to the US Census there were 1,079 youth in Adair County ages 5 and under or nearly 20% of the population. 30.7% of Adair County families with children live in poverty also according to the Census, therefore it can be estimated that many of these children under five qualify for SNAP benefits. &n
