Situation:

Fewer chronic diseases and fewer overweight or obese youth were identified as the most important issues that can be directly impacted by the educational programs and support of the Extension Service in the 2019 Boyle County Extension Community Assessment.  The availability of substance use prevention programs and more support for prevention of school violence and bullying also ranked as important issues. The Boyle County Extension Council has identified helping pre-middle school youth make healthier food and lifestyle choices as their number one priority for Extension staff.  Data support this focus by the community on health and prevention:

Long-Term Outcomes:

The county has lower incidence of heart disease and diabetes.

Lower rates of negative and risky behaviors among youth K-12.

Intermediate Outcomes:

Clientele choose to be more physically active.

Clientele practice healthier habits and use screenings to improve health.

Clientele forego substance abuse and risky behaviors.


Initial Outcomes:

Clientele learn about physical activity programs and opportunities in the community.

Clientele review dietary guidelines.

Clientele recognize the negative effects of certain foods, behaviors, and choices on health. 

Youth learn how their bodies work and the impacts of diet, physical activity and lifestyle choices.

Youth Explore MyPlate with Professor Popcorn

Major Program: Health

In the 2015-16 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the national obesity rate for children ages 2-19 was 18.5%.  In 2017, the Centers for Disease Control reported Kentucky youth in grades 9-12 had a 20% rate of obesity with an additional 16% of youth categorized as overweight.  Kentucky is notoriously inactive, ranking 50th in the CDC’s 2017 Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System with 34.4% of adults reporting no physical activity or exercise other than their regul
