Situation:

In one of the more populated areas of Kentucky, sustainability is a topic of concern and has become a focal area and marketing opportunity for thousands of businesses, colleges, and universities across the U.S. (Schmit, 2009). Those most in need of- and likely to experience a lasting impact in- sustainability outreach are youth (Chawla, 1998; Schusler, Krasny, Peters, & Decker, 2009). This 5 day camp program will have topically focused days consisting of remewable energy, water conservation, climate change, sustainable food systems, and sustainable living/ communities.

Long-Term Outcomes:

Adoption of any new sustainability practices in participants households as a result of participation.

Intermediate Outcomes:

Reduction in food waste and landfill destined waste materials, and increase in composed food materials.

recognizing each of the above categories of waste and understanding the positive and negative impacts of each.

Initial Outcomes:

Increase in knowledge of the daily topic (renewable energy, water conservation, climate change, sustainable food systems, and sustainable living/ communities). or an improved attitude towards the importance of the topic.

Evaluation:

Initial Outcome:

Indicator: Increase in knowledge of the topic or an improved attitude towards the importance of the topic.

Method: Pre and Post Journaling entries daily

Timeline: during the week of the camps


Intermediate Outcome:

Indicator:Reduction in food waste and landfill destined waste materials, and increase in composed food materials.

Method: Measuring of trash, recyclables, and compostable materials brought to lunch by participants daily.

Timeline: daily, during the camp


Long-term Outcome:

Indicator: Homes of participants understand impact of sustainable practices and have adopted lasting practices that reduce their negative impacts.

Method: Parent Survey

Timeline: one month after programming

Audience: youth, grades 4-6
