Leadership is a needed and important programming emphasis in Kentucky 4-H. The Cooperative extension service provides opportunities to youth and families to help improve their leadership ability and create most positive futures. Leadership opportunities for youth create a setting that reduces the access of youth to risk factors that can negatively impact their success.
Basic leadership knowledge & skills are essential for success in almost any field. The skills associated with leadership are necessary when working in a group or communicating with others. Employers look for leadership skills in the persons they hire. Developing leadership in the youth and adults who are involved in the 4-H program is a priority. By assisting the development of leadership skills in today’s youth, we improve their ability to face the challenges of tomorrow.

As our society becomes more globalized it is imperative that as non-formal educators we provide opportunities for youth to engage in activities that will expand their worldview and global mindset. Learning to sew is a real-life engineering and construction project. Clinical studies have found that students who learned to sew a simple project showed elevated creativity after the activity. In addition, these individuals who learn to sew may also be developing skills for a fulfilling, stress-relieving hobby. Bullitt County had many youth who were interested in learning to sew. 4-H planned with homemakers to offer a 4-H Sewing Camp during the summer and no school days. After meeting the youth

Major Program: 4-H Volunteer Programming
Volunteers play integral roles in 4-H programs, performing a variety of duties, functions, and tasks and possessing varied and rich knowledge, skills, and backgrounds (Radhakrishna & Ewing, 2011). The success of Extension programming is due, in part, to the dedication of a large cadre of volunteers (Smith, Dasher, & Klingborg, 2005). 4-H youth development programs and other program areas within Extension depend heavily on adult volunteers and provide extensive education to volunteer
