Farmer's Markets
- With the Locally grown movement in full swing, more and more individuals want to grow their own fruits and vegetables. The Master Gardener program allows for community members to gain experience for their selves as well as share their wealth of knowledge with other producers and youth.
- Grant and loan programs through Extension and other agencies (USDA, Soil Conservation, etc.) has allowed an increase in permanent structures such as high tunnels.
- Extension Master Gardeners extend the educational outreach to community gardens, youth gardens, lawn and garden practices, etc.
- Increase number of vendors with variety of products at the farmers’ market.
- Extension Master Gardeners engage as facilitators for classes and/or workshops.
- Redemption rate of senior vouchers at the farmers’ market increases annually.
- Redemption rate of WIC vouchers at the farmers’ market increase annually.
- Extension Master Gardener Program flourishes with increasing number of certified volunteers.
- Identify production methods to extend the growing season for fruits and vegetables.
Initial Outcome: Master Gardeners will pass their certification exams and maintain their educational and volunteer hours.

The Cumberland County Farmer’s Market had a wonderful 2018 season. Three vendors now have multiple high tunnels each. This allows them to extend their market season. The market offered four new programs this season, POP Club, Prescription Program, Pantry Program, and Summer Feed. In Cumberland County, diabetes affects 16%, hypertension 42%, and heart disease deaths are 313 per year (all of which are above the state average), according to the Kentucky Health Facts. In the county 1140 individuals are food insecure. Only 2.3% consume five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day, according to the CDC. The Cumberland County Master Gardeners have completed a lot of interesting projects this year. They have a total of 449 volunteer hours spread across 13 individuals. This is equivalent to $11,418.07 in savings to the Extension Service (independentsector.org). They have assisted with a homeschool JR Master Gardener group, volunteered at the Farmers’ Market on Saturdays, worked on landscaping at Dale Hollow State Park, gave out a local scholarship, volunteered for PRIDE Clean-up, etc.
