Food Preservation
Learning life skills related to parenting and family development, personal development, social development and cognitive development to help individuals and families spend time together. Most people gain a sense of accomplishment after learning a skill that benefits them and/or their family. There is a growing interest in Do-it-yourself skills related to family development and sustainability than in previous years. Extension leaders and community partners have indicated the value of teaching life skills in the community. High School Career and Technical educators have also indicated a willingness to work with extension on educational program efforts for FFA students.

Grow Your Own Vitamins-Sweet Potato Project 2017Rowan County has a population of 20,898 as of 2010 census, 3057 (15%) are seniors that are 55 or older. 18 % of the seniors live in poverty in Rowan County and have limited access to fresh produce. FCS Agent initiated a program called Grow Your Vitamins with goal of increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables. Cooperative Extension has provided educational outreach to residents and staff at a skilled nursing facility in Rowan County a number of times over the years. Efforts have included landscaping consultations and working with leaders to bring therapy dogs to interact with facility residents. In a new program effort, extension provided leadership, financial support, and educational resources to establish a small garden used by residents. Kentucky 4-H Camp objectives for 4-H campers are to learn practical skills, develop effective interpersonal relationships with adults and other youth, and develop socially acceptable behavior, personal standards and values for living. The Rowan County 4-H program fulfilled these objectives in 2018 when it took the largest number of campers, teen and adult counselors to camp that it has ever taken. 166 attended Feltner 4-H Camp for four days in June.
