According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, KY adult obesity rates are among the 10 highest in the United States; and, KY youth rank among the 10 highest for obesity as well. The CDC also reports KY adults rank in the 10 highest for poor consumption of fruits and vegetables. In addition, only 30% of KY adults report not participating in any physical activity.
NEP (SNAP-Ed and EFNEP) programs help limited resource families increase access to affordable nutritious food, stretch food dollars, develop skills and improve food safety practices. NEP efforts also help communities address nutrition and obesity prevention issues related to social, environmental, and policy work which supports limited resource individuals in making healthy lifestyle changes. In Lawrence County, the poverty rate is 25.9%; adult obesity rate is 41% and adults overweight is 73%;and lack of physical activity is 29%. Access to nutritious affordable food is a problem for most families especially fresh fruits and vegetables; hence, only 4% of county residents consume the recommended 5 or more fruits and vegetables per day.
