Building the capacity of volunteer leaders within counties is critical for the sustainability of a community infrastructure that supports long term commitment to strengthen communities. Community volunteers who share their expertise, and volunteer time with youth, families, and individuals in their community. Through the efforts of Grant County Cooperative Extension and volunteers local citizens can become engaged, educated and empowered to understand community issues and take ownership of implementing local solutions.
- Kentucky communities’ health and economy are strengthened through strong local organizational leadership
- Community problems are solved through active engaged local leaders.
- Leaders serve as active Extension and community volunteers engaged in addressing community needs.
- Leaders provide the county with experienced leaders who can assist in the implementation of sewing-related programs; develop lasting friendships with other Volunteers thereby gaining a support-group that can improve quality of life

Soon after the arrival of a new 4-H Agent in Grant County a problem was swiftly perceived. This problem was identified through a combination of direct conversation with volunteer leaders and the personal observations of the new 4-H agent, Haley McFarland. The problem being that the vast majority of Grant County 4-H volunteer leaders had a very basic understanding of their roles and were lacking guidance and knowledge regarding new statewide updates/changes. Grant County is a clean county. Grant County has a long-standing state and county funded program that allows non-profit organizations to clean up local roads and earn money through Grant County Solid Waste Management. Our Grant County Homemakers along with the Family and Consumer Science Agent, participated in the fundraising program by picking up garbage along five miles of Baton Rouge Road, the road in which the extension office is located.
