Kentucky Extension Leadership Development (KELD)
Situation:
The Northern Kentucky Master Gardener program is a joint effort between Boone, Kenton, and Campbell Counties. This unique collaboration allows us to consistently have a quality program of 35 Northern KY residents returning 80% of their hours to extension programs. 42 counties in Kentucky have a Master Gardener Program with an annual savings of $850,000/yr while conducting over 211 education classes throughout the state.
Long-Term Outcomes:
100% of the candidates passing the Master Gardener final exam and 90% fulfilling their volunteer component and becoming certified Master Gardeners.
Intermediate Outcomes:
Develop and enhance volunteer projects which receive wide recognition as assets to the community.
Initial Outcomes:
Attract candidates who will become long-term horticulture volunteers and assume leadership roles with extension and in the community.
Evaluation:

Long-term Outcome: Increase in certified Master Gardeners
Indicator: participants become certified Master Gardeners
Method: completing volunteer hours at extension-approved sites

Intermediate Outcome: Increase in volunteer opportunities
Indicator: Participants develop volunteer opportunities and get extension approval of sites
Method: completing site registration form

Initial Outcome: Increase in completion of Master Gardener coursework and passing of final exam
Indicator: Participants complete course work and pass final exam
Method: final exam scores, class evaluations, observation of hands-on skills

Kentucky Extension Master Gardener Program

The Kentucky Extension Master Gardener Program began in the late 1980’s and was initially active in a few urban counties. Today (data averaged over FY2015&16 reports) the program is active in 50 Kentucky counties with 1,445 active volunteers who contribute in excess of 43,000 service hours and provide research-based plant information in over 83,000 direct contacts with Kentucky residents each year.
