Situation:
During a visioning session, the Pike County Extension Council identified music and arts diversification, handcrafted artisan awareness and expanding arts to the community as a need for the county. Unfortunately, there has been a sharp decline in the arts program in our schools. Pike County Extension Fine Arts is committed to educate and empower our citizens through the arts as well as enhance the community and economic development of our communities utilizing arts programming as the vehicle.
Long-Term Outcomes:
Pike County

Socially,
Quality of education will increase in core curriculum as well as 21 Century Soft Skills: critical thinking, problem solving, empathy, team work, responsibility,
Attendance to arts activities will increase.
Sense of Community will become stronger.
Connectivity will increase among people.
Citizens of all ages will have increased leadership skills.

Economically:

Value of Education will increase.
Communities have increased pride, aesthetics, increase in population
Pike County will have a commodity in tourism which will attract paying visitors.
Support businesses will improve as tourism increases.


Environmental

Communities will have improved visual identity through more public art.
Communities will address pollution issues through awareness and improved leadership.

Elkhorn City Night Market

Community Art Classes

Beginning in May 2017, Pike County Extension Fine Arts began offering free monthly art classes to the general public. Tuition-Free After School Theatre Classes

Major Program: Increasing Access to Quality Arts Experiences

Each semester, Pike County Extension for Fine Arts partners with Artists Collaborative Theatre (ACT) in Elkhorn City to offer theatre classes to students in grades K – 12. The completely tuition-free after school classes are one of our biggest and most well received programs. Every aspect of the classes is free; students are even given snacks and transported to the theatre and back completely free of charge. Pike County Extension Fine Arts, in cooperation with Pikeville Poetry and Progress Pike, held a workshop geared toward teen girls. The “Story to Song” workshop, facilitated by Berea musician and songwriter Melody Youngblood, set out to help teach young women to value their own ideas, experiences, and creative power.Five girls participated in the program, which consisted of two evening workshops and a final public performance.
