Situation:
Estill County is part of the area know as the Eastern Kentucky Coal fields. An economically depressed area with a major "brain drain" of youth who choose to leave the county due to lack of opportunities. This has lead to a shrinking population, stagnant wages, and a retraction in the local economy. During open meetings to generate a list of issues facing Estill County the need for career exploration and workforce readiness was included more often than not.
Long-Term Outcomes:
For youth and adults to find or create careers in Estill County to grow and diversify the local economy.
Intermediate Outcomes:
1. For youth to start small businesses based on skills learned from extension programs
2. For community members to develop strategies for attracting new businesses to Estill County.
3. For youth and adults to work together to take control of the local economy
Initial Outcomes:
For youth to learn skills they can use to start business
For youth to participate in the APES Program
For youth to participate in the MANNERS program
For adults to learn sound business strategies
For farmers to develop additional income based on products produced locally.
