Building the capacity of volunteer leaders is critical for the sustainability of communities that support and strengthen families. Family and Consumer Sciences Extension is committed to engaging, educating, and empowering local citizens to investigate issues, make responsible decisions, and take ownership of solutions.
Ballard County's health and economy are strengthened through strong local organizational leadership.
Community problems are solved through active engaged local leaders.
Implementation of leadership practices designed to improve successful accomplishment of organizational goals and objectives.

Major Program: Leadership 4-H Core Curriculum
According to research, middle school is a time where young people find their place in this world, they are exploring where their strengths and interests align (Fagell. P.L., 2019). Therefore, it is imperative to provide positive experiences where young people may explore the world in a safe environment. Due to the decline in enrollment numbers throughout the middle school years in 4-H programming, Kentucky 4-H hosts the Kentucky 4-H Summit Leadership Conference for middle schoolers (grades 6-8)

Carol Coplen, Ballard County Master Food Volunteer, has been a 4-H leader and extension homemaker for nearly 40 years. She has taught food and nutrition classes at the club, county, area and district levels. She serves as a foods judge and food demonstration judge as well. A twenty year 4-H volunteer and 4-H alum received the Dedication of the State 4-H Horse Show.
