Small Farm Area Agent

Mr. Tehran Jewell joined the Kentucky State University in January 2002 and currently serves as an Area Agent in Financial Management for the Small Farmers Program.  As an agent, he utilizes technical aspects to develop outreach concepts, assists cooperators with intensive one-on-one training,  manages cause and effect on-farm situations from data collected in the field and makes recommendations using university-proven techniques, coordinates Small Commercial Vegetable (SCV) farmers, networks SCV farmers to utilize their equipment, develops marketing plans to move fresh produce and proteins throughout the state, coordinates the urban to rural farm-to-table marketing of farmer (rural) wares to be used in the kitchens of high-end restaurants in the state (urban), coordinates not only farmer wares in low-income/underserved/limited-resourced citizens in food deserts but also coordinates inner-city citizens that have been disconnected from rural way of business/life by developing curriculum and managing their participation on the rural farms while networking and increasing on-farm labor for the small farmer.  He makes multiple reoccurring visits and delivers technical information, not excluding educational tours and conferences, provides an opportunity for farmers to utilize fact-based data and techniques and opportunities streamlined for small enterprise, farm families, and small businesspersons alike.

Mr. Jewell has been an educator of SCV enterprise acceptance on-farm throughout the state.  He has developed cause and effect reasoning as to why small farms are sustainable, advising farmers markets & buying and selling group in the region as well as National conference boards, radio shows, and web companies.  Jewell has served as extension advisor for multiple markets in the state that look to become sustainable. Farmer networking, business planning and cash-flow analysis assessment planning, farmer recommendations and networking of farmer-owned equipment, coordination of personal equipment, and one-on-one intensive production and marketing training of farmers’ wares are duties of this agent’s past, present, and future.

Mr. Jewell is a graduate of the University of Kentucky’s College of Agriculture and received a degree in Agricultural Education.  Mr. Jewell has obtained many certifications and trained in the field of agriculture.
