PersonKentucky Extension Reporting System

Julie N.

Julie N. Zimmerman

Coughenour Professor of Rural Sociology

I am a rural sociologist and an Extension faculty member in the Department of Community and Leadership Development.

For Cooperative Extension, I developed and run the Extension program Kentucky: By The Numbers which focuses on addressing needs associated with accessing and using data for local decision-making, planning, program development and evaluation. Three pillars underpin my program: 1) data access; 2) data literacy; and 3) data analysis/assistance.  My program includes skill-based training, custom data analyses, direct assistance, resources for accessing and using online secondary data, and web access to resources and commonly used data.

My research has both an academic and an applied focus.  In addition to historical research on the role of the social sciences in the USDA and colleges of agriculture, I conduct applied research on Kentucky,  I also hold a joint appointment with the Department of Sociology and am a faculty member in the Sociology Graduate Program.
