Rowan County has a population of 20,898 as of 2010 census, 3057 (15%) are seniors that are 55 or older. 18 % of the seniors live in poverty in Rowan County and have limited access to fresh produce. In Boyle County the Horticulture Agent and FCS Agent partner regularly on programming and outreach. In 2019, the Horticulture Agent partnered with Centre College to start a CSA for the employees of the college. The FCS Agent would provide Plate It Up recipe cards for each of the prepared CSA share bags. It was extremely successful which led to another year. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Feeding America, Kentucky and Logan County have a significant number of children and adolescents that fall under the classification of overweight or obese (16.1% overweight and 20.0% obese adolescents and 16% overweight and 15.9% obese children ages 2-5 years). Research is clear that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help protect against several chronic diseases, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers. Nationwide, it is estimated that only 12.2% of adult meet the recommended amount of fruits each day and only 9.3% meet recommendations for vegetables (CDC, 2018).
