In 2015, 27% (6,349 residents) of Johnson County received SNAP benefits; this was a 27.6% increase since the year 2007. Johnson County Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) continues to deliver programs on the health, nutrition and food security topics. The type of food we eat, and the way we prepare it, as well as the costs of each meal is a consistent priority for the FCS program. Despite being several years out of the 2009 economic recession, Kentucky continues to lag behind other areas of the United States in household economic indicators, including personal income, population living below the poverty line, and unemployment rates. For instance, the percentage of children living in poverty has risen to 36% over the past two years.
